Rustlers Take Down CNCC for First Win Streak

Rustlers Take Down CNCC for First Win Streak

For the second time in the matter of 5 days, the CWC Men's Basketball team took on Colorado Northwestern. After a lopsided 101-72 win in Rangely, CO, on December 4th, the home town Rustlers faced an energized Spartan squad Saturday afternoon. The game was highly contested throughout with a monster second half run propelling CWC to a 94-82 win.

The Rustler squad was challenged throughout the first half. Struggling to knock down open jump shots, CWC could never pull away from the Spartans. Holding a 10 point lead multiple times throughout the first half, CWC took a 42-35 lead into the halftime locker room. Jacob Smith was the catalyst in the first half scoring 13 points.

CNCC came out in the 2nd half dominating the first five minutes. With a 9-0 run, the Spartans climbed to within 1 point of the Rustlers, 52-53. The next three minutes saw the Rustlers take over, going on a 13-0 run sparked by two Darius Guinn 3's and an alley-oop dunk by Jerroda Briscoe. Taking the lead 66-52, gave the Rustlers the momentum and lead they needed to win the game. "This was probably the first game all season a team put a run on us and we responded. Once CNCC made their charge I was a little scared how we would respond. The guys rallied around each other hitting big shots, attacking the basket, and stringing consecutive stops together. We are continuing to mature as a team and that is all I can ask for as a coach." Commented Coach Schmit on his team's second half performance.

Highlights from the game included a season high 16 made 3-pointers, 20-22 from the free throw line, and 21 assists. Six players scored in double figures for CWC, David Simental (23), Jacob Smith (14), Darius Guinn (14), Taylor Tidzump (12), Devin Rottweiler (11), and James Woods (10).

CWC will be back in action Friday, December 14th against Snow College (11-0) at 5:30 PM MT.
