Rustlers struggle at Gillette Rodeo
The Rustlers traveled to Gillette this past weekend to compete at the second of six scheduled rodeos for their spring season. Combined with both the men's and women's teams, the Rustlers only had three contestants in four events make it back to the short round rodeo on Sunday. Fortunately, all of them were on the points teams and they all finished well enough in the average to gain some much needed points for their team.
Tymber Taylor led the way for the lady Rustlers. She placed fourth on the long round of the Goat Tying with a 7.2 second run followed by a 7.0 second run in the short round placing her second in both that round and the average.
Thomas Davis was the only Rustler to make it back in multiple events and after the dust settled, he ended up winning the Steer Wrestling and placing sixth in the Bareback Riding. In the long round he threw his steer in 5.2 placing him fourth, followed by a 5.4 second run in the short round which placed him third in that round, but with a total time of 10.6, he was the fastest on two. In the Bareback Riding he had a 68 point ride in the long round which placed him third for the round, but he missed his horse out in the short round which caused him to receive a no score. He still managed to place sixth in the average with only one score.
Brady Thurston managed to squeak into the short round in ninth place after scoring a 56 in the long round of the Saddle Bronc Riding. He had to bear down on a tough horse in the short round to be 52 point which placed him fifth in that round and jumped him to fourth in the average.
"As a whole, it was a tough rodeo for us," said Coach Schrock. We had a lot of our team draw up in the slack on Friday and the first run on the cattle for the weekend. Even though we had seen all of these cattle at the LCCC rodeo, it is still beneficial to get the second run on them for the weekend. I'm not making excuses for us, though we had some opportunities on Friday and let them slip away and those are the ones that are hard to take. It was good to see the few that made it back to the short round finish strong and get some much needed points for their team. We've still got four rodeos remaining this spring season and we are going to put this rodeo behind us and move forward doing the things that we believe will help us to win, like working on our horse power, basics, and continue having positive attitudes."
The Rustlers will travel to Torrington, WY to compete at the EWC Rodeo this coming weekend, March 23-25.
