Rustlers compete at EWC Rodeo

The Central Wyoming College Rodeo Team traveled to Torrington, Wyoming where they competed at the EWC Lancers Rodeo this past weekend. The men's team had seven make it back into the championship short round on Sunday, and the women had three. After the dust settled, the men's team placed fourth and due to some major and minor injuries, the women placed seventh.

Leading the way for the men's team was Jace Berger who qualified for the short round in all three of his events and won the All-Around Cowboy title for the rodeo. He and his partner, Taylor Davidson, tied for 10th and 11th on the long round of the Team Roping with a 13.7 second run followed by a 17.3 second run in the short round.  They still ended up placing sixth in the short round and sixth in the average. Jace was the only CWC Steer wrestler to gain points placing fifth in the long round, short round, and average. Bryce Sturman qualified for the short round in tenth position, but wasn't able to get his hands on his steer and received a no-time. Jace also placed fifth in the tie-down roping after qualifying for the short round in the fifth position after tying his calf in 11.4 seconds and placed sixth in the short round with a 12.2 run.  Winning the tie-down roping was Brady Thurston who split winning the long round in a three way tie of 10.2 seconds run, but won the short round with a 10.0 second run. This run put him first in the average on two, tying them in 20.2 seconds. Thomas Davis missed his first Bareback horse out and received a no score, but came back with a vengeance in the second round to win it with an 80 point ride, which was the highest marked ride of the weekend.

The women's team was led by freshman Karson Bradley, splitting fourth and fifth in the average of the Barrel Racing with a total time of 30.88 on two runs, after a fourth place finish in the long round and fifth in the short round. Deni Lou Nicholls made it back to the short round of the Breakaway Roping with a 2.8 second run that placed her splitting 4th and 5th of the long round, but with no-time in the short round she got bumped out of the average points. Frankie Orahood made it back in Goat Tying placing 9th/10th with a 7.8 second run but wasn't able to better her time in the short round, tying her goat in 10.6 which placed ninth overall in the average.

"All in all it was a better weekend for us this past weekend, " said Coach Schrock. "It's unfortunate that the women's team has been plagued with injuries. Tymber Taylor blew her knee out last week during goat tying practice and will have surgery next week. Josee Vogel isn't out of competition, but is pretty sore after her horse clipped her foot after her dismount during the goat tying, tripping her causing her to land really hard on her left shoulder. Kassie Kautzman had to get stitches in her shin after her horse crashed into the third barrel. All three of these girls have been key players for the women's team this entire season. I look for Josee and Kassie to make full recoveries before the CSU rodeo in two weeks, but it's too bad that Tymber is out for the season. As for the men's team, it was good to see Jace have a great weekend and help gather up some much needed team points. Brady, Thomas and Taylor have been consistently in the winners circle this year, and while the men's team is 6th in the region, they are only 400 some points out of 1st. I really feel that with all the All-Around Cowboys we have on this team that it is very realistic for them to make up those points in the final three rodeos this season. We have two weeks of practice and will continue to work on the things that will give them a chance to win when the opportunity presents itself."
