Davis wins Steer Wrestling Rookie Honors at CNFR

Freshman Thomas Davis went into this rodeo with the same mind set he had all year, and that was to take one run and ride at a time. This proved to work well for him, as he was able to finish third in the nation in Steer Wrestling. In round one, Thomas threw his steer in 6.3 seconds placing him 20th in that round. He came back in the second round stopping the clock in 4.3 seconds which placed him fifth in the round and moved him up in the average. Davis stayed solid in the third round throwing his steer in 4.8 seconds which was only good enough for 8th place in that round, but more importantly moved him up to 4th place in the average going into the championship short round on Saturday night. He saved his best run for last, throwing it in 4.1 seconds, placing him second in the round and moving up one more spot to number three in the nation, also winning him Steer Wresting Rookie honors for the CNFR. The Bareback Riding didn't go as he had planned. In the first round he received a score of a 69 with an option for a re-ride after his horse bumped into one of the pickup men.  He bucked off his re-ride after opting to take another horse trying to get a higher score. Davis rode his second horse for 64.5 points and bucked off in the third round. 

 

Taylor Davidson was never able to get any momentum, receiving a no-time in the first round after drawing a really strong steer. With that no-time staring at him from the first round, he needed the next two rounds to go really well so that he could get some go round points and money.  Unfortunately, Davidson's second and third steers wouldn't allow him to do so, throwing his second one in 9.4 and his third in 7.8. 

 

"It is always an honor to be able to take kids to the CNFR and represent Central Wyoming College," said Rodeo Coach Drew Schrock. "To be able to watch them go there and compete the way that you know they can is really special. There isn't a kid there that isn't deserving of being there, but when you add in the draw of the livestock and the amount of pressure from the electric atmosphere it was awesome to watch Thomas have the week that he did. His Steer Wrestling horse was a little tight in the box on his first run, so afterwards him and I visited about a couple things that he could do to ensure he was listening to Thomas a little better for the following rounds, it seemed to work and the rest is history.  He drew four pretty "user friendly" steers and used them. I know that Taylor is disappointed, but to be honest, he didn't draw very good and when the competition is that stiff, it is important to draw good and be in the mental state of mind to use them. He did get a chance to haze for Thomas on all four steers and did an amazing job.  Without Taylor, Thomas might not have finished where he did. They both did a heck of a job and I am proud of them. Thanks to everyone that came to support them at Casper and throughout the year."
