First Spring Rodeo to Take Place in Gillette

The weather sure doesn't show it, but the calendar says it's time to start the spring rodeo season for the Central Rocky Mountain Region and CWC.

After the fall season, the CWC men's team is 5th and the women are in 8th.  Brady Thurston leads the All-Around.  He's 2nd in the steer wrestling, 5th in the saddle broncs and 11th in tie down roping.  Karson Bradley is third in the barrels.  Nate Weyrich is 10th in the steer wrestling while Cole Trainor is 13th in the same event.

Academic eligibility has removed four athletes from the men's team.  They will be taking only 5 men to the spring rodeos.  They'll need to all perform well, as teams can score six cowboys each weekend.

Coach Drew Schrock was disappointed losing athletes, but said they must press on. "Obviously losing four guys, two of which were in 4th and 7th in the bareback and 6th in the steer wrestling, isn't what we had planned.  With that being said, we have had some outstanding practices over the winter because everyone that is here is really focused on school and rodeo.  Not to mention, they all get more one-on-one time with plenty of livestock to go around.  We will only be entering five guys on the points team instead of six, so that means for the team to move up in the standing they will all need to be contributing on a regular basis."

As for the women's team Coach Schrock said, "I feel like the breakaway ropers are looking as good as I've ever seen them.  I really anticipate that Sophomore Sala Buesig and Freshman Maddie Meidell will make an impact for the team this season."

The Rustlers are to take part in a three day event in Gillette this weekend.  While the rodeo will be indoors, travel could affect several teams from Southeastern Wyoming, Nebraska, and Colorado.
