Weekend Recap; Rustler Athletics

The 13th ranked Rustler Volleyball Team finished a long and difficult week going three and one.  They swept conference opponents Casper and Western Wyoming during the week before heading to Scottsbluff, Nebraska.  They lost in three hard-fought games to 2nd ranked and defending National Champions Iowa Western.

Head coach Darshaya Gallard was pleased with her team's effort stating, "Against Iowa, we found our confidence in the second set and took a nice lead, but made some unforced errors.  I think the girls were somewhat intimidated even though the team was very beatable.  Through this experience, we learned a lesson.  It honestly does not matter who is on the other side of the net… a weaker or stronger team….  We need to show up with the same focus on our side.  It was great playing these high-level teams in the middle of our season."

The Rustlers then swept 16th ranked Western Nebraska.  It's the third time they beat the Cougars this season.  "It was great to walk away with a win on their home court and we are excited to go to regionals on the same court in November," Gallard added.

Central hosts Eastern Wyoming on Friday and Laramie County on Saturday as the second half of the conference season begins.

Golf wrapped up their regular season on the road.  The ladies took the first four spots, again.  Elly LeBlanc was the medallist with Aubree Johnson four strokes behind in 2nd place.  The women were undefeated in the Fall taking first thru fourth and winning the team title at every event.   Trevor Berry of Chadron, NE again led the men tied for 11th.  The CWC men finished fifth.  Golf will resume in the Spring.

Cross county saw a new recordset.  Competing against 13 other schools, 11 of which are 4-year teams, and 86 runners, Jayden Yates and Luke Crossley both broke the school record.  Yates finished 11th overall running 25:52.  It's the first time a CWC runner has broken 26 minutes since the program started eight years ago.  The previous record time was 26:06 set by Tristan Mitchell from New Castle.

Luke Crossley broke the previous school record by one second and was 14th overall at 26:05.  Other CWC runners times/finishes:  Kameron Brough- 43rd (27:26), Gabe Villalobos 46th (27:31), Christian Corona 59th (28:46), and Dino Baldes 71st (30:03).

In the women's race, CWC was led by Jessica White who ran a PR of 20:59 to finish 36th and Scarlett Sisemore 52nd at 23:59.

The Rustlers will be off until October 30th when they host the Region 9 Cross Country Championships on the CWC campus.

The women's soccer team lost a hard-fought 1-0 decision in overtime to Western Wyoming on Friday in Riverton.  Both soccer teams are in Cheyenne today to face LCCC in games moved up from Wednesday due to the impending doom of snow headed our way.

Soccer has three matches each remaining in the regular season. They are both home this Friday and Saturday to close out league play hosting NJC and Western Nebraska.
