Rustler's Start 2023 With Resounding Home Wins

Rustler's Start 2023 With Resounding Home Wins
After a long Christmas break, the men's basketball team was back in action last week with a two-game homestand. Game one took place on Thursday against Miles Community College. With only eight healthy players taking the court the opportunity for playing time was plentiful. The game was a lopsided affair with CWC jumping out to an early lead and never giving it up. With a first-half score of 66-33, it would have been very easy to relax in the second half. This was not to be, with CWC outsourcing Miles 56-32 in the second half leading to a final score of 122-65. All eight players who took the floor scored for the Rustlers, six scoring in double figures, and Jaren Miller scored a career-high 36 points.

Coach Schmit's comments on the game: "Junior college basketball is like playing two short seasons. Three weeks away from each other is a long time. Not being on campus, not practicing, and no competition can be challenging to come back to. Being able to play like we did is an encouraging sign of what we are capable of second semester."

After such a dominant win it would be easy for the team to take Saturday's contest against JumpStart Academy lightly. With Jumpstart getting off to a 5-0 lead it looked like the Rustlers were in for a game. After an early timeout from Coach Schmit, the Rustlers went on a 17-0 run to claim the lead and control of the game. "I was not pleased with how we started the game or how we played for 15-20 minutes of the game. Luckily, we were the far superior team and could control the other 20-25 minutes. We have to play better this week or the results will not be the same," provided Coach Schmit on his team's performance. Though early the game was in question, ultimately CWC held the lead for 37 minutes winning by a final score of 99-65.

Once again the team play of the Rustlers was the key. All eight players scored, all eight players recorded a rebound, and seven players handed out an assist. Jaren Miller finished his monster week of games with another 30-point performance totaling 32 points on the night.

The team is back in action this week with a home game on Thursday against Northeastern Junior College, a neutral site game on Friday against Lamar, and an away game against Air Force Prep on Saturday.
