Rustlers Drop First Two Region 9 Games

Rustlers Drop First Two Region 9 Games
The CWC Men's Basketball team opened up Region 9 play this week with home games against LCCC and Casper. Unfortunately, both games saw the Rustlers come out on the losing end, dropping the first game against LCCC 81-89 and losing a comeback effort against Casper 85-88. "To say I am disappointed in the results would be an understatement. As a program, we have made a huge emphasis on competing and winning within our region. Playing the way we did against both teams to start region play was not indicative of the team we have," commented Coach Schmit on his team's overall performance.

The LCCC game saw balanced scoring from the Rustlers with five players scoring in double figures (Black-17, Roberts-16, Miller-15, Nunn-12, Cruz-11). The team attack on the offensive end did not happen on both ends of the court. CWC gave up 89 points, well above their season average, while allowing the Golden Eagles to shoot 57% from the field and 44% from 3's. Combining that with a 3-17 performance from 3's for CWC and result spoke for itself.

Game two in Region came against Casper, which had much of the same feel as the LCCC game. CWC gave up 88 points, allowing the Thunderbirds to shoot 48% from the field along with 11-21 from 3's. "We are not competing on the defensive end as individuals or as a group. This was a staple of our good play during the first semester, but right now we have lost our way." provided Coach Schmit on the lackluster defensive effort. The main individual highlights came from Jaren Miller scoring 28 points on 9-15 FG's and Deotis Nunn handing out 8 assists with 0 turnovers.

The Rustlers are back in action Saturday traveling to Torrington to play Eastern Wyoming College. The game time is set for 4:00 PM MST.
