Rustler Men's Basketball Upset Bid of #5 Salt Lake Falls Short

The Central Wyoming College men's basketball team took the court for the first time this season on Wednesday night. Facing off against national powerhouse, Salt Lake Community College. The Bears from Salt Lake made the trip to Riverton repping a top 5 ranking in NJCAA DI basketball. "What better way to start the season. Playing one of the best teams in the country on our home floor. I knew this game would be very challenging for us and that is why I scheduled it," commented Coach Schmit on the opening game of the season.

For 40 minutes, the fans watching in Rustler Gym and anyone who tuned in via Youtube, got to witness a high level college basketball game. With CWC being built on passing, shooting, and team play, while SLCC is centered around throwing the ball inside and attacking the paint in transition. Contrasting styles led to neither team taking control of the game. With :50 to play and the score CWC-70 and SLCC-72, the game could have went in either team's favor.  A timely made 3-point basket by Salt Lake opened up the lead to 5, which ended up sealing the game for the #5 Bears.

"I could not be more proud of my guys. Coming into the game my goal was to be within 1-2 possessions late in the game. We made that happen. Unfortunately college basketball sometimes simple comes down to shot making. Salt Lake made a timely three pointer that ripped our heart out. Hopefully over the course of 30 games we will hit a couple of those in our favor." quoted Coach Schmit on his team's performance. CWC was led in scoring by Lorence Dela Cruz-20 and Julian Roberts-15.
