Two Top-5 Nationally Ranked Teams Provide Great Competition for the Rustlers in Salt Lake Tournament

The Central Wyoming Men's basketball team met a pair of familiar top-ranked Region 18 opponents on the hardwood this past week in Salt Lake City. Their first games of December saw the Rustlers lace their shoes up against the No. 3 and No. 6 ranked NJCAA division one teams in the country: Snow College and Salt Lake Community College. The catch is CWC already had the pleasure of battling against both of these teams this season, and will actually play Snow again for a third time on January 11.

After a 100-50 blowout only five days earlier in Ephraim, Utah, the Rustlers were dead set on evening the series against the third-ranked Badgers during their matchup at the classic hosted by SLCC this past Wednesday. And although they were more efficient on offense in the first half of this game compared to a week ago, the Rustlers still struggled to take care of the ball and surrendered 16 first-half turnovers. These turnovers led to points for the Badgers, and allowed them to pull out to a 61-21 lead by halftime. All of Mohamed Mahadhi's team high 10 points came in the second half, but it wasn't enough to stop Snow College from cruising to a 112-48 win.

Thursday night's game matched the Rustlers up against the host of the classic, Salt Lake Community College. Central Wyoming held the Bruins very close the entire first half, with a near-identical box score once the first half horn went off. SLCC sharpshooter Ethan Copeland, who had previously gotten injured during their November 8 matchup, could not miss from behind the arc in Thursday night's game. His six three pointers on a perfect 6-of-6 shooting kept the Rustlers at bay anytime they tried to steal the lead. SLCC slowly pulled away in the second half and pulled out a 74-55 win. Julian Ormond, Mohamed Mahadhi and Dominic McLawrence all were in the double digits for points, and McLawrence led the Rustler's rebounding efforts with eight total boards.
