Rustlers Traveled to Chadron State to Compete in First Rodeo of the Season

For the first time in almost a year the Rustler Rodeo Team hit the road. This past weekend they went to Chadron, Nebraska to compete at the first of 10 scheduled regional rodeos. When it was all said and done CWC was able to claim the number one spot in the Barrel Racing.

Freshman, Rebekah Hartley, was the only one from the Women's team to qualify for the short round on Sunday.  She stopped the clock at 18.55 seconds in the long round, which was fast enough to place third. Hartley came back in the short round with a blistering 18.12, the fastest run of the rodeo, placing her first in the round and the average.

The Men's team also had two freshmen qualify for the short round.  Kaden Berger in the tie down roping, and Dustin Thompson in the Steer Wrestling. Kaden led the way tying his calf in the long round in 9.7, which was fast enough to tie him for 4th/5th. Unfortunately, he was a little long in the short round to place in the average with an 11.3. Dustin Thompson threw his long round steer in 5.1 seconds placing him 9th/10th but wasn't able to catch his steer in the short round resulting in a no time.

"It is exciting to get back at it," said Coach Schrock. "These kids work their tails off to be able to compete, and after having our season shut down last spring it was nice to be able to see them do what they love and see all the other coaches and kids from throughout the region. The coaching staff and I couldn't be prouder of the way our team competed and conducted themselves this past weekend. Our goal is to obviously have more than three kids back to the short round, but sometimes weather or arena conditions change...sometimes in our favor and sometimes not. We had a lot of our team up on Friday slack, and unfortunately the ground was still fairly muddy from the storm that rolled through there at the start of the week. As the weekend progressed the ground improved, and so did all the times. The team should feel great about their performance, shoot out of 14 breakaway and tie down runs they stopped the clock 12 times, that is really impressive. Kaden Berger made two outstanding runs, he just happened to draw the only calf that decided to run in the short round. We have a few little things we are going to sharpen up this week during practice to get ready for LCCC Rodeo this upcoming weekend. Make sure to follow the CWC Rodeo Facebook and Instagram pages for updates and videos from each slack and performance throughout the season."
