Rustler Rodeo Competes at First Spring Rodeo

Rustler Rodeo Competes at First Spring Rodeo

The Rustlers traveled to Gillette this past weekend for the first rodeo of the spring season. After the dust settled they brought back the championship buckle in Steer Wrestling and a Reserve Championship in Tie-Down Roping.

Wyatt Stephens led the way for the Rustlers by winning the Steer Wrestling. He split 2nd and 3rd in the long round with teammate Jett VanBeizen with a time of 4.5 seconds and followed that up with a 4.6-second run in the short round giving him a 9.1 on two head. Jett was unable to get his short-round steer caught resulting in a no-time and dropped him to 8th in the average. Dustin Thompson also made it back to the 10th position in Steer Wrestling with a time of 5.7 in the long round but also received a no-time in the short round. Clay Reiner made it back in both the Team Roping and Tie-Down roping. He and his partner, Lan Fuhrer from Casper College, stopped the clock in 7.6 seconds in the long round placing them in a split of 6th and 7th, but unfortunately, Lan missed their short round steer resulting in a no-time and dropped them to 9th in the average. In the long round, he claimed the 10th place position in the Tie-Down Roping, with a time of 11.5, and then followed it up with a short round winning time of 9.2 seconds giving him a time of 20.7 on two and moved him up to 2nd in the average.

Kennedy Sheehan was the only Lady Rustler to make it back to the Championship Round on Sunday. She split the 9th through 11th place in the long round with a 7.9-second run but had a 10-second penalty in the short round giving her a time of 18.0 and dropping her to 10th in the average on two head.

"It's good to get our spring season underway after a long cold winter of practice," said Coach Schrock. "This entire team has been working very hard all winter to be able to practice. The snow has resulted in the majority of their problems, from drifting snow causing them to get stuck going to and from practice and the extreme cold weather that resulted in vehicle problems. I am proud of them for keeping good attitudes and continuing to grind even though it wasn't always easy. As for this past weekend, the team as a whole did great, of course, we always want to win more but sometimes that is out of our hands in this sport. We had some new horsepower make the trip with us this weekend that worked really well and what makes it more special is that they made or finished them on their own during our winter practice. We are going to Torrington for the Eastern Wyoming College rodeo this coming weekend."
