Women's Basketball Splits Home Conference Opener

Women's Basketball Splits Home Conference Opener
The Rustlers were back in action at home and looking to make up for lackluster performances the previous weekend of conference play. The Orange and Black began with a matchup versus Laramie County Community College out of Cheyenne. The Rustlers started hot, forcing the Golden Eagles into an early timeout with a 12-4 lead with 6 minutes to go in the 1st quarter. However, the Rustlers would hit a drought coming out of the timeout with LCCC going on a 19-0 run. The Rustlers trail at half before catching fire in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Golden Eagles in the final two quarters 54-39 before ultimately falling 83-78. Four Rustlers finished in double figures, led by freshman Esperanza Vergara with 18 points. Freshman Ariana Rodriguez and Emily Sawyer poured in 15 points a piece while Katie Walker dropped 11 points.

The Rustlers would use Friday's hot shooting to carry over into Saturday's competition against previously undefeated conference competitor Eastern Wyoming College, now 3-1 in conference play. The Rustlers would face a similar start, going up early leading to a quick timeout by the Lancers before the orange and black went cold for several minutes allowing the Lancers back in the game. However, the drought would end as the Rustlers put up 63 second half points to pull ahead for the win 91-81. Five Rustlers finished in double figures and were again led by Esperanza Vergara with 22 points, Tiffany Tervort and Ariana Rodriguez each contributed 14 points while Emily Sawyer put up 12 herself. Freshman Natalia Ballin finished with 10 points.
