Hampton Inn Tip-Off Classic Kicks off the Season for Women's Basketball at Home

A new head coach has graced the Central Wyoming College women's basketball team like a breath of crisp, fresh autumn air. Keith Wyatt was hired in June of this year, and has been tasked with taking over a program that struggled to get it going in the 2023-2024 season, only pulling together nine wins out of 30 total games, a slight improvement from their 4-23 overall record the season prior. Wyatt hails from Salida, Colorado, and graduated from Metro State University in Denver, Colorado in 2011. He began his coaching career in 2013, mixing up coaching stints between Prairie View High School and Salida High School up until 2023, which most recently he held an assistant coaching position for Laramie County Community College's women's basketball team during the 2023-2024 season.

Regarding the roster outlook for the upcoming 2024-2025 season, the Rustlers return six total players, three out of their top five scorers from the previous season. This group is headlined by Blackfoot, Idaho native Esperanza Vergara, who averaged a team-high 12.1 points per game last year. A pair of Utahns in Natalia Ballin and Katie Walker round out the top returning scorers, each boasting 9.6 and 7.8 ppg averages from the 2023-2024 season.

Following the theme of returners, local Dubois standout Maren Baker rejoins the Rustlers for her second year playing for the CWC women's basketball. The 5'7" sophomore is eager to prove herself this year and earn more playing time after making appearances in 26 games last season, but only garnering five total starts. Along with Baker, there's a new face uniting with the Central Wyoming squad that should be familiar to those around Fremont county. Freshman Kiera Lincoln from Lander Valley High School is hoping her spectacular ball-handling skills and dazzling shooting talent can provide an uplifting effect for the Rustlers this year.

The Rustlers are getting the ball rolling at home with the Hampton Inn Tip-Off Classic in the Rustler Gymnasium on Friday and Saturday November 1 & 2. Their first game takes place against Salt Lake Community College at 7:30pm Friday night, and then the Rustlers match up against Western Nebraska Community College on Saturday afternoon at 4pm.
