Rustler Soccer Teams Fight Tooth and Nail Against College of Southern Idaho
The 2024 Central Wyoming College Soccer Season kicked off on Thursday, August 22, with the Rustler teams hosting the College of Southern Idaho at Jackson High School in Jackson, WY. The 80 degree weather and remarkably radiant sunshine were perfect in setting the stage for the Rustler Men's and Women's teams. The energy level was palpable, as enthusiasm and eagerness flowed throughout both locker rooms. After countless hours of practice and preparation against one another since the beginning of August, the opportunity for the Rustlers to start their seasons on a high note against a new opponent had finally presented itself.

The women's team started their season with a hard-fought match, as they struggled offensively and had trouble finding the net, resulting in a 0-3 loss to CSI.

"We use the preseason matches as a learning tool. We play everyone and sometimes play individuals in positions where they have very little experience. This allows us to effectively evaluate what we need to work on so we are ready for our region matches," Coach DeCook said in regards to Thursday's match, "and while the result was not what we wanted, we did have some great play. Freshman from Scotland, Daisie Donegan, and several lady Rustlers from Layton, Utah, Jersee ClapierKristen Moss, and Sienna Bodily, all showed great composure and the ability to play at our level. We will certainly build around these four and expect big things from them for the rest of the season."

In the men's match against CSI, the international players on the Rustler's roster made their presence known. Brazilian native Pedro Belmont assisted English freshman Josh Bromwell off of a cross that Bromwell waited patiently for on the back post before he drove it into the net for CWC's first goal of the season. The trend continued in the second half, this time it was another freshman out of England, Ryan Hill, who took his turn putting the ball past the keeper, with a score from the 18 yard line off of a pass from fellow international teammate Lucas Guilbaud, who hails from France.

The final goal of the afternoon came at the 85th minute by the foot of another CWC international player. Freshman from England, Charlie Jones, duped the CSI Goalkeeper on a penalty kick that tied the game up at three goals apiece. Ultimately, after a back and forth battle all game, the match ended in a 3-3 tie.

"Charlie certainly deserved the [penalty kick] PK. A few minutes ago, he was kicked in the head causing a small laceration. He held his composure and was able to return to play immediately," DeCook stated in a review of the men's match, "CSI was certainly keying in on him. We played 33 men today and each one played an important role. We are on the way to take on SLCC Saturday. It looks to be a great match up. After today I can say this is going to be an exciting season and we are going to surprise a few teams this year."
