CWC Shows Out on the Soccer Pitch Versus Top Competition

On Saturday, August 24th, both CWC Soccer teams faced a pair of talent-rich foes in Salt Lake City. The women's team took on the Utah Surf, a semi-pro team that competes in the Women's Premier Soccer League, in a scrimmage, while the men played the number 4 ranked NJCAA team in the nation, Salt Lake City Community College. Both games took place at Bruin Field on SLCC campus.

The Rustler women had their hands full against a Utah Surf team that was loaded with Division 1 All Americans and All Region players from around the country. The Saturday morning game proved to be a tremendous learning opportunity for the Lady Rustlers, with the Surf's very fast one and two touch style of soccer pushed the pace of the game nonstop. The Rustler women eventually settled in and developed an equally fast pace. CWC's Kylie Moyer and Willow Aullman were tasked to keep the soon-to-be professional winger in check. The freshmen quickly adapted and never let her score. CWC kicked off their scoring with some heat from Mia Boll, the first goal of the season for the team was a scorcher from the middle of the box. The second goal for the Lady Rustlers came from the Swiss freshman, Elena Stebler. Elena propelled the ball past the outstretched arms of the diving goalkeeper into the net all of the way from the left side of the box. The final goal of the day for the Rustler women was courtesy of a former high school teammate connection. Jersee Clapier found her fellow Layton High Lancer, Kristen Moss, open on the 18-yard line, where Moss pounded the ball past the Surf goalkeeper.

The scrimmage ended with a score of 3-7 in favor of the Surf, but Head Coach Ken DeCook was optimistic about how much effort and resilience the Lady Rustlers had shown, "The women are developing nicely and definitely starting to play as a team. We had some bright spots today against a very good Surf team. We have another week to work a few things out but everyday we see improvement and without a doubt these ladies are working to be ready for the region 9 matches."

Following shortly after the women's game, the Rustler men took the pitch against the SLCC Bruins men's team. The first half of the game was truly a spectacle for anyone in attendance, with the Rustlers keeping up pace and applying the pressure to the high-powered Bruins squad. Even though SLCC carried a 1-0 lead into halftime, CWC was anything but discouraged about their quality of play in the first half. The beginning of the second half was much like the first, up until the 65th minute when a breakaway opportunity for Lucas Guilbaud to attack appeared. The scoring daylight closed with a nasty collision between the SLCC defender and goalkeeper with Guilbaud inside of the penalty box. Guilbaud was slammed to the turf, and had to exit the game with a head injury. This event caused a major swing in momentum for the Bruins, as they went on to score shortly thereafter, and added two more goals before the end of the game to cement the final score 4-0 in favor of the Bruins.

Coach DeCook was excited about the level of play he saw from his team, "Our guys took the game to SLCC. Our objective today was to control the middle and play at their level... We are very proud of the way the guys played today."

DeCook had a laundry list of players who he felt really showed out and played some great soccer for the Rustlers, "Charlie Jones, a freshman from England, Josh Bromwell, another freshman from England, and freshman from France, Lucas Guilband, all had tremendous play. Columbian Sophomores Camilo Vasquez and Andres Trochez anchored the defensive middle that caused SLCC fits. We also had a great day from Salt Lake City Sophomore Josh Jackson who stepped up his game on the defensive line and saved more than one goal. Stanley Schumann, the freshman from Germany, had a dynamic afternoon in the goal with several saves. All in all a great day of soccer by the Rustler soccer teams."
