Rustlers split at home

With the end of the regular season quickly approaching, the Central Wyoming College volleyball team hosted two conference opponents this past weekend. Friday, October 13th, CWC welcomed Western Wyoming Community College.  The Mustangs and Rustlers played for the second time this season.  WWCC defeated CWC in their first conference match of the season on September 22nd.  The Mustangs won 3-2.  Friday's game was much different than the first.  The Rustlers controlled the match from the beginning, sweeping WWCC 3-0 (25-23, 25-22, 25-19). Middle blocker Kaela Small, a freshman from Brigham, Utah, said her team had a little extra motivation after losing in their first meeting with the Mustangs.  "In Friday's game I felt like we came to play!  Maybe we had a chip on our shoulder because of unfinished business. We had great chemistry and truly played as a team." The next afternoon CWC was host to the Casper College Thunderbirds.  Casper College made quick work of the Rustlers in their first meeting, sweeping CWC in three straight sets.  Saturday's game was a different story. The host team started the first set on fire, beating Casper for the first time this season, 25-16. The T-Birds mounted a comeback in the third, winning 25-22.  CWC captured the third set, 25-18 but Casper pulled out the fourth set in another tight one, 25-23.  The fifth, and deciding set, appeared to be in control of the Rustlers before Casper regained the momentum, winning the set and match, 16-14. While it was a loss, Olivia Davies, a freshman defensive specialist from Providence, Utah, said her team showed they have come a long way from the beginning of conference play.  "While it was hard to lose in five, we showed a lot of improvement from the last time we played them."  Considering the Rustlers have taken the top two conference teams to five sets in the last couple of weeks, Davies said her team has one goal.  "Ultimately we need to find a way to win those long fifth sets."  With the win and loss, CWC evens their conference record at 4-4 with four conference games left to play.  The Rustlers travel to Torrington and Cheyenne for a second meeting against Eastern Wyoming College and Laramie County Community College this Friday and Saturday.
